The most important part of picking out hi-vis apparel is knowing whether it needs to be ANSI compliant. If it does need to be ANSI compliant there are two classifications that you need to be aware of: class 2 and class 3.
Class 2: Class 2 apparel is intended for environments that pose a greater risk than those that require Class 1 traditional safety yellow or orange apparel. Class 2 apparel is medium sized because of the ANSI requirements. Class 2 apparel must have at least 775 inches of safety yellow or orange material and 201 square inches of reflective striping.
Class 3: Class 3 apparel is intended for dangerous environments and is typically larger because of the ANSI requirements. They must have 310 square inches of reflective striping and 1,240 inches of safety yellow or orange material.
Non-ANSI: Non-ANSI rated gear means that it does not meet the requirements set forth by ANSI and should not be used in low light situations where certified hi-vis gear is required.

Head Protection:
Protecting your skull is an important part of job safety. It’s no secret that working in at-height, industry, and construction that there are a wide variety of hazards on a job site at any given moment. That’s why being proactive about head protection should be a priority for everyone. Our comprehensive selection of head protection equipment includes climbing helmets, hard hats, bump caps, and a whole slew of accessories.
Our head protection accessory collection is extremely diverse. No matter what you are looking for, we’ve got a solution to help you stay safe and get the job done. Our head protection accessories include hard hat/helmet tethers, reflective strips for added low light visibility, clips for extensions, extensions like face shields, clips for visors and headlamps, headlamps, foam inserts, sweatbands, replacement suspension, sun protectors, ear muffs, chin straps, winter inserts, cooling towels, and more.
A bump cap is a lower caliber form of head protection. Unlike hard hats and helmets, bump caps do not go through any ANSI testing. That means they do not meet ANSI Standards and SHOULD NOT be used in situations where ANSI rated gear is required or recommended. Bump caps do serve an important purpose, though. They are great at providing basic head protection. Bump caps resemble a ball cap. The only difference is that they have a layer of protection added to the portion of the cap that sits on top of your head.
This protective layer is great for minor head bumps and abrasions. Our selection of bump caps from brands like JSP and Ergodyne come in a range of colors and styles. We also have a varied selection of bill lengths and caps that come with headlamps built in.
When choosing your helmet for your climbing gear setup you should consider a range of factors. The best helmet choices will include helmets that are designed for working in vertical positions that feature a four-point chin strap. Other features to look for are electrical insulation, adjustable inserts, sweatbands, and ear muff slots.
Types of Helmets: There are two types of helmets (type 1 and type 2) classified by ANSI Z89.1-2014 for different levels of protection. Type 1 helmets are designed to only take a blow directly to the top of the head. Type 2 helmets have been designed to reduce the force from lateral impact such as an off-center and/or side impact, in addition to top impacts. These helmets have visible padding on the sides.
Helmet Classes: There are 3 classes (C, E, & G) that specify electrical protection. Class C helmets are considered conductive and do not provide any electrical protection, these are typically vented and only protect workers from an impact. Class E hard hats offer protection from high voltage conductors up to 20,000 volts, and cannot have any vents in the design. Lastly, Class G offers protection from low voltage conductors up to 2,200 volts, they must also be free of holes for ventilation.
Service Life: Helmets are not designed to last forever. Service life begins from the time it is put into service and that date should be properly labeled and documented. The suspension should be replaced annually (after 12 months) and the helmet should be replaced after no more than 5 years. If the helmet sustains an impact, it must be retired immediately even if there is no visible damage.
Inspection: Proper inspection should be taken each time the helmet is worn. The suspension should be installed and worn as the manufacturer intended. Exposure to paint and chemicals may damage the structure of the helmet, therefore steps must be taken to remove paint or chemicals after every use. Pressure sensitive, non-metallic stickers and self-adhesive tape are typically accepted however we strongly recommend you refer to the manufacturer's specifications before applying anything on the surface of the helmet.
Hard hats share a lot in common with helmets. In fact, many people say hard hat when the really mean helmet and vice versa. While the end goal of both is the same, to protect your noggin from a fall or falling objects, there is one main thing that separates the two. Helmets have a four-point chin strap, while most hard hats do not. When choosing your hard hat for your gear setup you should consider a range of factors like electrical insulation, adjustable inserts, sweatbands, and ear muff slots. Hard hats also share ANSI Standards and Classes with helmets, so everything we mentioned above under helmets applies to hard hats as well.
Hand Protection:
Your hands are your trade and protecting them is a priority. When working in at-height, industry, and construction the ability to use and protect your hands is an important part of your job. After all, it would be hard to do what you do every day if your hands were damaged. The job site is a dangerous place and it is our responsibility as Gear Experts® to do everything we can to help keep you safe. Our selection of hand protection includes coated gloves, cut resistance gloves, disposable gloves, economy gloves, thermal gloves, trade gloves, and glove accessories so that no matter what the job site throws at you, you can be prepared to get the job done.
What is a glove accessory? Well, our three types of glove accessories are glove grabbers, glove bags, and glove protectors. Glove grabbers are revolutionary if you tend to lose gloves, or never have a place to set them when you take them off. Our glove grabbers feature a belt clip that you simply attach to your belt. When you need to take off your gloves, just attach the gloves securely to the grabber, and BAM gloves stored and not lost.
Glove bags serve a similar purpose to glove grabbers in that they help you transport your gloves and help prevent them from getting lost. The big difference between a glove bag and a glove grabber is that the bag offers additional protection for the glove. Some specialty gloves might need to be kept out of the elements or kept dry. Glove bags can help increase the lifespan of your gloves.
Glove protectors, on the other hand, (pun intended) offer mechanical protection for rubber insulated gloves. That means that the protector is worn over the glove to offer cut resistance and protection from other harmful chemicals. The rubber insulated glove is used for electrical protection.
Coated gloves have a wide range of uses and happen to be one of our most versatile categories. Depending on the liner and dip coating these gloves can be used for jobs ranging from industrial manufacturing to chemical resistance. Most gloves are available in a range of sizes.
When looking at gloves one of the most important things to look at is how effective those gloves are at protecting your hands from sharp and abrasive material. That’s where cut-resistant gloves come in. The job site is no stranger to sharp edges and jagged metal - that’s why our Gear Experts® put together some of our favorite cut resistant gloves. We feature gloves ranging from ANSI A2 to A4 cut resistance and even have gloves that are compatible with your favorite touchscreen device.

Disposable gloves offer single-use light hand protection from things like liquids, chemicals, and debris. As mentioned in the name, these gloves should not be used more than once. It should also be noted that while they offer some protection, they should not be used in situations where a higher caliber or specialty glove should be used.

Economy gloves are perfect for when the job doesn’t call for heavier duty gloves, but you still need a protective layer on your hands. These gloves are lighter and thinner, but that doesn’t mean they can’t protect your hands from dirt, dust, grime, and some chemicals.
Mother nature usually has her own plans, which means that we need to be prepared no matter what the weather brings. The last thing you want to deal with while working in cold environments is your hands freezing. Cold hands can make working difficult and waste valuable time on the job site. Eye Protection:
Your eyes – some refer to them as windows to the soul. Others simply use them to see. Either way, it’s hard to argue that your eyesight isn’t important. When working in at-height, industry, and construction there is no shortage of hazardous situations, materials, and chemicals that can be flying around the job site all day, every day. With your eyes being a crucial part of your profession, keeping them safe is a priority. That’s why eye protection is such an important part of your PPE setup.
Eye protection is available in three main categories (Face Shields, Safety Glasses, and Safety Goggles). Below we will outline some of the key differences between each method of protection, but before we do let’s talk about what actually makes safety glasses… safe.
Anyone can claim that their eye protection is safe – that’s why standards have been put in place. Specifically, the ANSI Z87.1 Standard for eye protection. The Z87.1 Standard outlines what requirements safety glasses must meet as well as how they should be tested.
The ANSI Z87.1 Standard has four different qualifying tests. If the eye protection passes the first test, they meet the Z87.1 Standard. This means they are good protection, but not great as this test does not qualify the glasses for use in impact hazard situations. If you are going to be doing work where there is or might be, an impact hazard your glasses must meet the remaining 3 tests. If it does, it will have the Z87+ marking.
Sometimes there are jobs that require even more protection than the Z87+ Standard requires. That is where military grade eye protection should be used. The MIL-PRF 32432 Standard represents that the eye protection has passed an additional round of testing.

A face shield is…SPOILER ALERT a shield that covers your face. Face shields can have a few different purposes. While many of them act as both a pair of safety glasses and a protective covering for your face, some of them feature a wire mesh instead of a lens. Face shields that feature a wire mesh are meant to protect your face and eyes from large particles and debris. It is important to note that wire mesh face shields do not have any sort of tenting benefit and many don’t meet any ANSI standards.
Some face shields are built for specialty applications like welding. Welding face shields usually have two configurations - a clear configuration and a welding configuration. The welding configuration features a lens that has been specifically developed to protect your eyes from the intense light generated when welding. Many welding shields also have respiratory features to help filter out chemicals.
Safety glasses come in a range of sizes, colors, shapes, and lens tents. While color and shape are typically features that are based on your preference, size and lens tents can make the difference when wearing safety glasses. Size of the safety glasses affects how comfortable they are and how much of your eyes they protect. While lens tent offers different options like anti-fog, indoor, outdoor, polarized, and a range of other benefits.
Most safety glasses are “all-purpose” meaning that they can be used on the job and on the weekends. It is important to mention that while safety glasses are very versatile, there are specialty applications, like welding, that will require eye protection beyond the capabilities of safety glasses.

Not to mention that like safety glasses, safety goggles, come in a range of sizes, colors, shapes, and lens tents. But what sets safety goggles apart? Well, that has to do with the way that they goggles are attached to your head and how tight they are to your skin. Safety goggles are closer fitting than safety glasses and most commonly have some sort of barrier (like foam or rubber) that closes the gap between the plastic and your skin. They also feature side shields that protect your eyes from chemicals, dust, water, and more.
Hearing Protection:
Your hearing is an important part of your life. Being around loud machinery and tools can cause significant damage to your inner ear and cause partial or even total hearing loss. Not to mention that dirt, dust, and other hazardous materials can get into your ear and cause a whole range of different issues. Keeping your ears and your hearing protected while on the job site is an intricate part of a proper PPE setup.
